Wet Bouvier "gnomes"
ESTRIK KENNELS was founded in 1986 with a male Bouvier puppy bought purely as a family pet. The Bouvier was a breed well known to Martin Kylstra in his home country the Netherlands. This pup did not live up to his expectations either in type or in temperament and a new start was made with the purchase of a bitch from Vonlabak Kennels (Vic). Vonlabak Auld Storm was 3/4 overseas bloodlines and was mated to Oscy Achantal van Dafzicht, imported from the Netherlands by Waterbear Kennels (S.A).Together with another bitch imported fron Holland by Waterbear Kennels, Kristel Skarlet van Dafzicht, this formed the foundation of the Bouviers we have today.
In early 1991 Ch Eros-Kira VD Vanenblikhoeve was imported from Holland. He was the son of Dutch & Am Ch. Tino Faisca VD Vanenblikhoeve one of the most influential sires of all time.
In 1997 a second male was imported, Ch Pako-Lacey VD Vanenblikhoeve,to carry on from Eros-Kira. Pako-Lacey also carried excellent genetics with dogs in his pedigree winning highly sort after prizes in the show rings of Europe and America.
In 1998 a bitch, Vronie-Raiza VD Vanenblikhoeve, was imported from Vanenblikhoeve Kennels. These three imports have made a remarkable contribution to the Bouvier breed in Australia.
Estrik Kennels has been very successful in the Show Ring. We have bred and shown 19 Australian Champions and 3 New Zealand Champions. Also one bitch, Ch Estrik Sierra, owned by Mandy Doyle (QLD) attained CD,CDX,ET (Obedience/Endurance)and herding titles.
An Estrik bred or owned Bouvier has won Best of Breed at Melbourne Royal Show every year since 1989, except 2006 and 2007. An Estrik owned or bred Bouvier has also won Best of Breed at all other Royal Shows contested (Sydney,Brisbane, Darwin & Adelaide) except Adelaide 2004 and Brisbane 2005, where the newest imported Vanenblikhoeve Bouvier, Tosh- Dusty, won Best of Breed. Tosh will feature prominantly in the future generations of our breeding having been imported by Judy and Paul Merrett, Swartebaard Kennels.
In 1995,under the only breed specialist that has judged in Victoria, Stuart Mallard (ENG), Estrik Bouviers won every class except three that they contested, including both Challenges, one Reserve Challenge, Best In Show, Runner Up In Show and Opposite Sex In Show (14 Estrik dogs out of an entry of 36 were entered). These dogs that did so well then and received such great written critiques can be found in the pedigrees of the dogs that we show today.
There have been Best in Show,Group in Show and Best in Group awards at both Championship and Open Shows but the greatest achievement is that after 19 years the Estrik Bouvier in Australia is now a good representation of a proud and noble breed.
